As in previous years, Porter Dodson has sponsored the Great Somerset Walk in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice. As well as being a fund raising event, it is an ideal opportunity to get some fresh air and do some exercise. Last year the event raised £25,000 and the aim is to raise £30,000 this year.
The walks has 9 registration points including Taunton, Bridgwater and Yeovil. Walkers can start and finish at whatever points they wish following a route on road, bridleways and public footpaths.
I have been taking part in this event for a number of years and my aim is to eventually cover the whole route. The plan had been to walk across the Somerset Levels, however with the rain that was had this winter, 2014 is probably not the year to tackle this. I therefore chose to start at the Yeovil Hospice, walk to Odcombe and then return to the Hospice. In all this was between 8 to 9 miles.
The great thing about this walk is how friendly all the other walkers are. Some people just say ‘Hello’ whilst others will stop and have a chat. We are all know that we are raising money for the same good cause and, like myself, many have had the experience of the care that the Hospice can provide.
