Taunton’s competitive advantage

More than a hundred members of Taunton’s business community recently attended a Breakfast at Somerset County Cricket Club to discuss the benefits the town has to offer companies looking to invest and expand.

The event, organised by leading business-to-business media company Insider, was led by a panel of speakers which included representatives from major Taunton firms Porter Dodson, Albert Goodman and Summerfield Developments.

Stephen Wray, Partner at Porter Dodson and Head of the Firm’s Taunton office highlighted the town’s location as one of its unique strengths “Taunton is ideally placed on the M5 with great links between Exeter and Bristol. The benefit is that as an expanding commercial hub in its own right, it provides employment and financial prosperity for those in the town and the rest of the County. From Porter Dodson’s perspective, having an office which services all of our clients’ needs maintains our commitment to the community as a whole.”

David Griffin, Managing Partner at Albert Goodman, commented “Taunton remains a unique and vibrant County town that has not been dependent on a single or few large businesses for its prosperity, but rather has a thriving community of small and often family run businesses.  Albert Goodman advises a large number of successful family businesses most of whom are ambitious for growth and further employment.  With the redevelopment of much of Taunton town centre and residential expansion there is an opportunity for Taunton to develop the necessary infrastructure to help small and family run businesses grow and expand.”

Chris Winter, Managing Director of Summerfield Developments SW Limited emphasised the fact that “Taunton has to look forward and plan for the future, to create a place that people want live and work. To do this the local authority need to be proactive in delivering planning permissions and allocating land that creates a positive environment that encourages business to come to the town.” He welcomed Taunton Deane’s ‘Taunton Means Business’ initiative that projects a proactive approach to encourage new business to come to the area.
