Lawyers’ Guide published by Legal Ombudsman
The Legal Ombudsman published this week a guide for people considering using a lawyer. The guide, which includes a list of top ten tips, is particularly aimed at the elderly and those with specific needs.
Robert Fox, Managing Partner at UK Top 200 law firm Porter Dodson, comments. “It is not always easy for people to make an informed decision as to which lawyer is best suited to them, or indeed if they do require the expertise of a lawyer. This guide reflects best practice and the principles upon which we as a firm have always been committed to operating. At Porter Dodson our priority is to understand completely our clients and their needs in order to provide the best possible levels of service: to develop lasting relationships with them as their trusted legal advisors.”
“We recognise the importance of investment in on-going specialist training and attracting high calibre specialist recruits who complement our team and ensure we are delivering effective solutions.”
Prospective clients can determine the relevant expertise and specialisms of different firms by looking at qualifications and professional memberships, such as those enjoyed by Porter Dodson. Particularly pertinent for those seeking legal advice regarding Wills, Powers of Attorney or Trusts would be The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Solicitors for the Elderly, Resolution and The Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme can also be good indicators of a firm’s level of expertise in a particular field. For carers, it can be reassuring to see a firm has affiliations with charities and organisations such as Mencap or the Alzheimer’s Society.
Robert continues “The guide suggests recommendations from family and friends are a good way to choose a lawyer. At Porter Dodson a significant amount of our work comes as a result of word-of-mouth recommendation from existing clients. We take client feedback very seriously to ensure we maintain an excellent standard of service which is tailored to our clients’ evolving needs. 95% of our clients would recommend us to their family and friends*, and whilst we are always striving to make it 100%, I think this is an impressive figure which reflects our commitment to the highest standards of client care.”
